This Umwindsi desk is very carefully designed and constructed to ensure a lifetime of use and to suit the superb reclaimed African hardwood material with which it is handmade. The splendid desk top is attached to the base frame using steel brackets that slot into a groove in the frame to allow for the natural movement that always occurs with genuine solid wood products. Even the drawer bases, also made of solid reclaimed African hardwood, slide into a groove that allows them to expand and contract. The drawer boxes are assembled with dovetail joints that are perfect for drawer construction as they will not be pulled apart by years of opening and closing the drawers, as tends to happen with commercially or less professionally constructed drawers that are made of stained softwood with plywood bases nailed together. Even the drawer cabinet is constructed with dovetail joints all along the four sides to give maximum carcass strength. The front panel sits in a frame made by the cabinet sides that allows the panel to move naturally. For this reason you may notice a lighter coloured line on the edge of the panel during dry periods or in heated / air conditioned rooms as the panel shrinks and exposes a slither previously covered by the frame.

The furniture is constructed utilising traditional methods of excellence. Drawers and boxes are joined with through dovetail and stopped dovetail joints, very difficult to make but extremely strong. Mortice and tennon joints are very carefully cut to ensure a perfect, snug fit that guarantees the integrity of each joint we make. All pieces are solid wood right through, with no plywood or hardboard utilised.
The furniture is designed and constructed to allow for the natural movement of solid wood.
